Master of Design (M. Des.) is a two-year, full-time program, open for candidates with an undergraduate degree in any discipline. It offers research-intensive, practice-based learning in a liberal, multi-disciplinary environment. It consists of 8 core courses, 5 elective courses, 1 semester-long design project, an 8-week long summer internship, and a year-long Master’s Thesis Project.
Core courses provide students with an overview of Design, focused on developing their basic skills, knowledge, and attitude essential for designing. Semester research project gives them an opportunity of applying their learnt knowledge and skills (from core courses) on a design problem. Summer internship exposes them with the practice of design in the industry. Elective courses and research projects offer students the flexibility of pursuing their desired specialization. At present elective courses in the following broad domains are available (for specialization).
- Product Design/Industrial Design
- Visual Communication Design
- User Experience Design/Interaction Design
Apart from mentioned specializations, a host of elective courses are also available in generic areas of design like Design Management, Design for Sustainability, Design Research etc. (refer program prospectus for list of electives available). The year-long design research project develops the research capabilities and enables students in conducting design research either independently or within multi-disciplinary groups.
